There’s something truly special about the warmth and aroma of freshly made tortillas. With just a handful of simple ingredients, you’ll create something far more flavorful and satisfying than any store-bought version. Whether you serve them warm off the pan or save them for later, these tortillas will bring a touch of homemade magic to every meal.

Ingredients

(for 20 tortillas)

  • 2 ltr all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 dl cooking oil (olive, sunflower or rapeseed)
  • 3 dl hot water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder with a wooden spoon or spatula until well combined.
  2. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and add the oil and water. Stir well from the bottom up until all the dry ingredients are incorporated and the dough begins to come together.
  3. Knead for 1-2 minutes until the dough is nice and smooth. Add more flour if the dough is sticking to your fingers.
  4. Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and leave it to rest for at least 15 minutes. If you don't let the dough rest, it will be rubbery and the tortillas will shrink when you remove the from the tortilla press.
  5. Divide the dough into 20 equal portions and roll the into a ball with your hands.
  6. Place the dough ball between two pieces of plastic (a ziplock-bag cut in two has the perfect thickness) in a tortilla press (or use a rolling pin). Diameter 12-20 cm.
  7. Heat a large dy pan over medium heat (no oil!).
  8. Cook the tortillas for 45-60 seconds until brown spots appear, adjust the temperature. Flip to the other side and cook for about 15-20 seconds.
  9. Stack them in a lightly damp kitchen towel or covered in a container. The stacking will keep the tortillas soft.
  10. Serve warm or allow to cool for later use. Can be refrigerated for up to 1 week or frozen separated with parchment paper.
